Rice Husk Biochar Mitigates Global Warming in a Barley Field in Ehime, Southwestern Japan
摘要
In our study, rice husk biochar was applied to optimize soil pH for barley to evaluate the effect of biochar application on barley yield, carbon (C) budget, and greenhouse gas emission (GHGE) in Southwestern Japan. The study was conducted at Ehime University Farm in Japan. Three treatments, conventional (D, dolomite, 150 g m−2), biochar (B, 6 kg m−2), and biochar × 2 (2B, 12 kg m−2), were set up on November 5, 2020. The C budget (kg C m−2) in 2B (3.10) was higher than B (1.62) and D (0.136) due to the higher contribution of C input. Increasing biochar C application caused increasing the C budget. The net GHGE in D, B, and 2B were −0.496, −5.92, and −11.4 kg CO2eq m−2, respectively. Grain yield was higher in B and 2B than in D that might showed improvement of soil health by the application of the biochar. Therefore, the yield scale net GHGE in 2B (−23.6 g CO2eq g−1) was the lowest. Almost no effect of biochar application on Rh and greenhouse gas emissions might be due to lower temperature condition. This study demonstrated that rice husk biochar application is acceptable for cultivating barley and mitigating global warming.
