Exploring the Architectural Legacy of Najafabad: Lessons from Iranian Vernacular Architecture and the Safavid Era

Najafabad, a small, traditional city near Isfahan in Iran, has a rich history steeped in excellence in urban design, architectural craftsmanship, and horticulture. This chapter delves into Najafabad’s past, describing some of the architectural techniques, cultural narratives, and design principles cherished by Iran’s master architects. Historical accounts, both written and oral, highlight historic threads dating back to the Safavid era under Shah Abbas the Great’s rule in 1613 AD. These accounts shed light on Najafabad, a thriving city known for its famous almond and grape orchards, and its urban evolution and architectural innovations. Prior research has touched upon Najafabad’s urban planning, a substantial gap persists in explaining its architectural legacy that this chapter bridges using detailed fieldwork to provide comprehensive findings gleaned from on-site investigations. These endeavors provide invaluable insights into the intricate design and unique structural features in Najafabad’s historic residences include the vaulted roofs, colloquially referred to as “taq-o cheshmeh,” which have stood as enduring architectural elements that epitomise tradition and resilience since the Safavid era. In many historical houses of Najafabad, a distinct difference in height is observed at the end of the main central axis between the exterior and the interior scale of the primary living space. This difference in height is due to the presence of the storage space of upstairs, which functions as a storage area for garden products, particularly almonds and grapes, and reflects the interweaving of domestic life and agricultural activities in the architectural fabric of Najafabad. This space, situated between the main living area and the roof, acts as a filter above the primary living space due to its specific characteristics in materials, roof shape and thickness, proportions, height, positioning relative to the opposite iwan, and the number, size, and placement of openings. It provides additional climatic comfort, especially against the summer heat, demonstrating how form, function, and climatic considerations come together to create a harmonious space.
