Excessive exploitation of land leads to multiple disruptions in its functionality and exerts considerable stress on the surrounding ecosystem. Agricultural pollution, mining pollution, and industrial pollution have adversely affected soil. To resolve these problem physicochemical properties of soil can be significantly improved by adding rice husk (RH) and rice husk biochar (RHB)/charcoal (RHC) as soil amendments. This chapter aims to compile studies on the beneficial effects of RH and RHB as sustainable soil amendments. The composition of RH and RHC is also discussed in this chapter. Furthermore, rice husk derivatives are discussed as an effective way of improving soil physicochemical properties. The finding shows that heavy metals can be immobilized by adding RH charcoal to soil. Additionally, rice husks and its charcoal enrich soil fertility and provide nutrients for plants. The application of RH derivatives can enhance the organic carbon content, porosity, bulk density, cation exchange capacity, and water retention in soil; however this is based on the particular type of soil.

摘要
