Larger Pathogenic Fungi on Crops

Sclerotium 1–2 cm long, 3–4 mm wide, cylindrical or corniform, slightly curved, flexible when young, sticky, hardened when dried, purplish black to purple brown, nearly white insides, usually with 20–30 stromata. Stroma consisting of a head and a stipe. Fertile head 1.5–3 mm wide, subglobose, ochraceous or orange red, with prominent spotted perithecial ostioles. Infertile stipe cylindrical, slender, sinuate, smooth, reddish brown. Perithecia 200–260 × 140–180 μm, embedded, only with a slightly exerted ostiole, lageniform. Asci 125–160 × 5 μm, cylindrical, hyaline, with eight ascospores. Paraphyses filiform. Ascospores 55–75 × 0.6–1 μm in diam., thin walled, smooth, hyaline.
