This chapter delves into why Zhe in Northwestern Chinese dialects exhibits so many syntactic and semantic characteristics that set it apart from Zhe in other Chinese dialects. Considering that Zhe in Northwestern Chinese dialects has so many unique features, which are neither found in similar words of other Chinese dialects nor in the Zhe of Classical Chinese, I speculate that this phenomenon is due to grammatical changes triggered by contact between Northwestern Chinese dialects and the non-Han languages in Northwest China. This speculation is supported by the data: non-Han languages in Northwest China have a series of grammatical forms that exhibit similar syntactic and semantic behaviors to Zhe in Northwestern Chinese dialects. The grammatical change of Zhe in Northwestern Chinese dialects represents a new type of grammatical change induced by language contact, which can be termed “compromise innovation”.
