Effect of Focus on Vowel Duration and Formant in Cantonese
摘要
In this study, the values of duration and formant of vowels in Cantonese under the effect of focus are investigated. The key words are embedded in carrying sentences, and the durations of the vowel and nasal coda of the first syllable of the key word are investigated. The subjects are ten native speakers of Guangzhou Cantonese. Results show that duration of long vowels is longer than that of their short counterparts under all conditions examined. The effect of focus on the values of vowel formants is also analyzed. Our results show that vowel quality is so affected that the F1 frequency is increased significantly. There is a strong effect of focus on the realization of both duration and vowel quality in Cantonese.
