India is experiencing accelerated urbanization, as is the case globally, offering Improved services in addition to enhanced social infrastructure, sanitary services, economic growth, technology, it is also the cause of much chaos such as environment degradation, quality of life, congestion, poor waste management, non-affordable housing, crime index etc. Considering all growing cities are expanding rapidly, it is estimated that 55% of the world's population lives in urban regions, with that number predicted to rise to 68% by 2050 (United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs) [1]. Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULC) constitutes a significant process in the course of urbanization. This study examines at the changes in Land Use and Land Cover in the Patna Metropolitan Region during the last four decades (1980 to 2020) using GIS and remote sensing. The study area's satellite data was processed using ArcGIS software to detect noteworthy alterations in Land Use and Land Cover (LULC). The Image classification technique is used to create five signature categories: Built-up, Water-body, Fallow land, Forest, and Agricultural land. Each category generates around 40 unique signatures. To aid in image Interpretation, spectral signature plots are also generated. Following that, a complete examination of Land Use and Land Cover changes across multiple decades is carried out. The study shows that increased urbanization within the boundaries of the Patna Metropolitan Region has resulted in a significant change in spatial trends. This study's findings are distinct. The built-up area has almost doubled and vegetation has reduced. Fallow land is reduced as it was converted to settlement and built-up areas. Agricultural land has also decreased vastly for the same reason. These will be useful in anticipating the direction of urban expansion, with a focus on Patna's particular issues and potentials, to aid in future urban planning and development.
