Real Estate Information Exploration in VR with LoD Control by Physical Distance

We propose a method for real estate information exploration in VR. It is difficult to find a real estate property that matches the user’s preferences from many properties. Each real estate property has multiple attributes such as rent, layout, nearest station, and so on. In web services for real estate information exploration, search results are usually displayed in a list similar to a standard Web search. Listed search results are not suitable for an overview of the information. We have developed an interface for information search that enables the user to overview real estate information in VR with an unlimited display area. In the proposed system, the user can select a target attribute or narrow down the results by attribute values. Real estate information is displayed as a panel in which information on several real estate properties is gathered. When the user physically gets closer to the panel, more detailed information is presented on the panel. In other words, level of detail (LoD) control by physical distance is implemented. Thus, the proposed system can intuitively and seamlessly switch between an overview of overall information and a presentation of detailed information. Users evaluated the LoD controls to be easy to operate.
