Agrivoltaic Systems for Enhancing Sustainability in Hot Arid and Semi-arid Climates

An increase in the number of solar photovoltaic (PV) farms on agricultural land may lead to a land use conflict. Fortunately, the concept of agrivoltaics, which is the co-development of land area for solar PV and agriculture, can solve this problem. Solar potential is high in hot, arid, and semi-arid regions, and the climate is better for solar production there; converting solar parks into agrivoltaic systems may make it easier to deal with both energy and food issues at the same time. In this research paper, we have first discussed the potential for solar energy in hot, arid, and semi-arid regions. Next, we have described the potential for an agrivoltaic system in terms of energy production, crop production, water conservation, and land use efficiency. For this, mainly agrivoltaic systems located in semi-arid countries like India have been mentioned. This study highlights the importance of agrivoltaic systems in advancing global sustainability by aligning them with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
