In the ever-evolving urban landscape, pedestrian mobility is a fundamental element of human experiences, and within this framework, gender plays a crucial role. This study, titled “An Exploratory Survey of Urban Pedestrian Mobility: A Gender Perspective,” delves into the dynamics of pedestrian movement in cities, with a specific focus on gender-related experiences. Amidst rapid urbanization and growing traffic, the safety and accessibility of pedestrian spaces are often overlooked. This exploratory survey seeks to unravel the complexities of pedestrian experiences, emphasizing gender-specific concerns. It assesses safety, convenience, and the overall pedestrian environment, delving into qualitative aspects like comfort, efficiency, and social interactions. The research methodology involves surveying urban pedestrian areas, with a keen focus on the unique challenges faced by different genders in their daily journeys. By shedding light on the gender-specific aspects of pedestrian mobility, this study contributes to urban planning discussions, underlining the need for inclusive and gender-responsive urban environments. The findings and recommendations aim to create safer, more accessible, and gender-friendly pedestrian spaces, aligning with the goal of equitable and welcoming urban landscapes. This approach was applied to Kanpur’s sidewalks using assessment questionnaires, revealing shortcomings through visual representation and data analysis. The study underscores the significance of evaluating women-friendly pedestrian areas with qualitative criteria. It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing urban walking spaces that cater to the unique needs of women, aligning with the broader goal of gender-friendly pedestrian environments in Indian cities.
