During the industrial revolution of the mid- to late-nineteenth century, both the United States and Europe saw unprecedented rates of population increase, unbridled corporate greed, massive speculative gains, and a general inability to control the negative physical effects of progress. During this time, massive urban centres sprung up, displaying the extremes of riches and poverty side by side.
