Employability of Permanent Formwork in Functionally Graded Concrete: A Review

The researchers have heeded functionally graded materials across the philosophies for their performance-enhancing characteristics. Functionally graded concrete on the same line has been under the scope for its implementation in civil engineering. Concrete gradation has been realized through a layering approach, which is further categorized as horizontal and vertical. The casting of the layer of homogenous mixes of different characteristics with a stipulated thickness along the depth of the member, say beam, is referred to as horizontal layering. The stacking so adopted in other dimensions is referred to as vertical layering. On the other hand, the permanent formwork concept has been deduced to expedite the construction process and minimize the need for temporary formwork. This paper concentrates on the employability of these permanent formworks as a layer to produce functionally graded concrete members. The experimental studies on using permanent formwork are reviewed, and the parameters affecting the behavioural assessment are discussed. The opportunities to introduce functional gradation using permanent formworks to develop FGC elements are presented. The paper concludes with a summary with a significant focus on limitations and future scope of research.
