Interactive Oral (IO) assessments have emerged as a powerful, versatile, and indispensable approach to Blended Learning environments. This chapter delves into the theoretical foundations and practical applications of IO assessments, drawing insights from constructivism, communicative language teaching, and andragogy. By examining diverse case studies and innovative practices, we explore the ability of IOs to scaffold knowledge, involve Students as Partners, offer scalability, and be integrated vertically and horizontally across programs. We evaluate their impact on student engagement, motivation, and the development of employability skills. Additionally, we explore their effectiveness in addressing academic integrity challenges and preparing students for real-world scenarios. Furthermore, we present a comprehensive framework outlining six design principles for effective IO assessments and offer a holistic approach to IO design that considers (a) competence, (b) application, (c) progression, (d) milestones, and (e) engagement. Finally, we discuss the outcomes and impact of IO assessments on student skill development, academic integrity, and career readiness, emphasising their crucial role in nurturing effective spoken communication skills—a vital aspect for lifelong success in the modern workforce.
