Market Segments, Marketing Techniques and Growth Trends
摘要
Indian seed sector from its pre-independence to the present day has completed a journey of more than 75 years. Three inflection points in this period of its phenomenal rise have been, Green Revolution (1965–68), New Seed Development Policy of Government of India (1988) and the introduction of transgenic Bt cotton (2002). The industry has grown many folds during this period with its present size of around Rs.33,000 crore (US $ 4 billion) being the fifth largest in the world. The key drivers of growth in the recent phase have been Bt Cotton, Single-cross hybrid maize, hybrid rice, hybrid vegetables and also open-pollinated varieties of some major field crops due to their higher seed replacement rate requirements. The second part of this paper covers contemporary marketing practices of the industry and their underlying considerations, covering various aspects, e.g. market segmentation, product life cycle, traditional and emerging distribution channels, sales force, publicity and sales promotion including field demonstrations, seed pricing and demand forecasting. The paper also throws light on the future of seed business management in India.
