ChatGPT Acceptance and Use Among Software Developers in the Philippines: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach Based on Extended UTAUT

ChatGPT provides efficiency and productivity in software development by enacting activities including code genseration, code review, bug fixing, among others. However, while the benefits of using ChatGPT are apparent, the gap between the software developers’ interest of using it and their actual use exists. This study investigated the factors influencing acceptance and use of ChatGPT for software development in the Philippines using Structural Equation Modeling. Performance expectancy, social influence, and trust are found to be factors influencing ChatGPT acceptance and use for software development. Software developers are using ChatGPT because it makes software development more efficient and productive. Aside from that, software developers believe that by using ChatGPT, their AI expertise will deepen making them more relevant in the industry. The moderating effect of experience and policy are non-significant. However, the results also showed that moderation is present. The study emphasizes the importance of organization support with respect to ChatGPT acceptance and use. Together with OpenAI, companies should also address the security and privacy concerns of the software developers. In terms of individuals’ expertise, the study recommends further exploration with respect to the prompt engineering expertise as a skill for ChatGPT adoption. This study contributes to growing number of studies related to ChatGPT adoption by contextualizing Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) for software development in the Philippines. Specifically, this study confirms an extended theoretical framework which can be used in studying Artificial Intelligence acceptance and use.
