Charting Careers in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence: Community Perspectives on Degree Essentiality
摘要
This study explores the necessity of formal academic degrees in the rapidly evolving fields of Data Science (DS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) by analyzing the perspectives of online communities on Reddit. Using a mixed-methods methodology, combining topic modeling and thematic analysis, the research investigates discussions within two subreddits: r/ArtificialIntelligence and r/DataScience. The findings highlight two key themes: the perceived competitive advantage of traditional education and the increasing acceptance of alternative learning paths, such as online courses and AI-assisted education. While formal education is still valued for its structured curriculum and credentials, a significant portion of the community acknowledges the adequacy of non-traditional educational pathways. The study concludes that a hybrid approach—blending formal education with continuous, self-directed learning—may be the most effective strategy for individuals pursuing careers in DS and AI, given the fast-paced and dynamic nature of these fields.
