This chapter will emphasise the importance of writing in language play and demonstrate how much of the play we encounter revolves around the graphological system in English. After an introduction to the background to English spelling, four principles are explained: the phonemic principle (and the 6 exceptions to it) followed by the morphological, etymological and distinguishing principles.
