This chapter covers a number of areas of study beyond the traditional systems of linguistics mentioned above. While they push the boundaries of modern linguistics in different directions, they have much in common. They all attempt to deal with language as communication rather than as code; this inevitably involves concentrating giving more focus to the spoken mode rather than the written, and in particular replacing the notion of sentence with the less precise but less limiting concept of ‘utterance’.
