The term ‘syntax’ refers to those parts of grammar which are not covered by morphology in the previous chapter; namely, the levels of words, phrases, clauses and sentences (though some do not accept the validity of the sentence as a level). Syntax is involved in many applications of language play; it is a rich source of jokes, riddles and puns, as well as being relevant to subjects as diverse as crosswords and Internet language.
