Popular Song
摘要
Language play in popular song has much in common with the light verse of the previous chapter. Both are dominated by phonological mechanisms such as rhythm and rhyme, but there are many differences. Rhythm and rhyme are typically much freer and looser in popular song; the music is an aide to structuring the lyrics which is not available in light verse. In addition we must not ignore other linguistic processes that can occur in the lyrics. A representative sample of songs will be analysed, for instance classics such as e.g. Bob Dylan’s ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ or more recently, ‘Where is the Love’ by The Black-eyed Peas.
