Jokes and Riddles
摘要
We now turn to an area that is full of language play: jokes. Not all jokes rely on language play, but many do. Where this is the case they are examined using the tools of incongruity theory (though this is still somewhat controversial), and the associated concepts of schemata. One other phenomenon which closely resembles jokes will be considered: riddles, in which a question is posed to the ‘victim’ which they are supposed to untangle and answer.
