Automated driving is expected to be utilized for reducing the number of traffic collisions, providing transportation with more flexibility, solving the problem of driver shortages in logistics, and realizing smoother, more comfortable, and greener traffic flow. However, besides technical challenges, there are also issues of safety, economic viability, and societal acceptance, which make it hard to claim that widespread adoption of automated driving is progressing all at once. This chapter will provide an overview of the current situation of automated driving technology and driver-assistance technology, which is a use of automated driving technology and likely to become more common soon.
