Design Methods for Switched Reluctance Motors

The flux linkage characteristics of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) demonstrate a highly nonlinear correlation with phase current and rotor position. This inherent attribute introduces numerous uncertainties in the design process of SRMs, with many dimensions primarily determined through the utilization of empirical formulas during the initial stages. These formulas incorporate certain assumptions regarding the characteristics of SRMs. In this chapter, the conventional design method is introduced first. This approach relies on empirical rules based on the designer's experience. Then, a novel magnetic parameter design method is proposed to overcome the conventional approach’s limitations. Each symbol in this method has a comprehensible physical meaning. The proposed method can effectively provide ideal design results for SRMs and eliminate the meaningless empirical coefficients of the conventional method. Finally, design examples are investigated.
