Acknowledges that one is a feminist elicits varied verbal and non-verbal responses within the African context. The most common response, however, is the assumption that one is not genuinely African and in danger of losing one’s African identity. The term ‘feminism’ seemingly evokes negative images of disconnection from the African identity. This paper seeks to investigate this phenomenon by first examining the concepts of feminism and African identity. It will then discuss the reasons behind the negative perception of feminism in Africa and advance the way forward. The main objective of this paper, however, is to motivate feminism and its tenets to be recognised and entirely accepted in Africa as it is pivotal to the growth and development of African women and the continent as a whole.
