Poverty remains an epidemic issue in South Africa and is mainly felt by women and children. Since 2000, South Africa has been experiencing a drastic increase in the unemployment rate, with women and the youth being the most affected. The main reason why many poor women sought informal trading and became exposed to various social ills, including gender-based violence. This chapter thus engages gender perspectives to delve into the informal sector and gender-based violence experiences of black African women street traders in Durban, South Africa. These unequal economic power relations are also patriarchal as more males than women dominate the economy and decision-making processes, making women vulnerable to male violence in addition to prevalent street crimes.
