Sustainable Production of Biobased Materials in the Global South

The textile, building, and packaging industries generate a lot of garbage, which poses serious environmental challenges. Developing novel biobased materials is crucial because the materials that are considered unsustainability in the sector are mostly textiles, plastic, and harmful solvents. Therefore, numerous approaches to waste conversion and recycling have been explored to generate economic value through the production of biobased materials. Environmental and economic benefits are anticipated to be enormous as a result of this shift to a biobased economy. In this chapter, we shall look at the many raw resources that could be used to create new biobased materials that help with the shift to sustainability. There is evidence in the literature that biobased materials can perform as well as manufactured ones. Biomass, a raw material source made from animal and plant waste, is appealing since it is abundant, biodegradable, and cheap. Manufacturing, characterization, and performance of biomaterials are also covered. Additionally, this chapter will provide a thorough overview of the established biobased materials’ prospective and actual commercial uses in pertinent domains. The environmental problems caused by the ever-increasing population in the global south may be amenable to this area of study.
