After Emperor Wuzong’s enthronement in May of 1505 (the eighteenth year of Hongzhi’s reign), the hidden crises that lay inside and outside of the imperial court were revealed, and internal political struggles intensified, tearing off the shiny veneer of “peace and prosperity” that had held during Emperor XiaozongEmperor Xiaozong’s era. Thickheaded but opinionated, Emperor Wuzong was by nature disposed to luxury and debauchery. He used power even more arbitrarily and entrusted eunuchs even more than Emperor Xiaozong.
