Starting with parallels between the connection of divination and philosophy in Western and Chinese cultural contexts, the text focuses on the question of how we can get to know what we cannot know. The Yijing illustrates the cognitive process in the two hexagrams xian 咸 and guan 觀: resonance and contemplation. They outline the idea of cognition guided by intuition. Intuition cannot be separated from the entire cognitive process, bridging discursive reasoning and inexplicable insights. In the case of the Yijing, divinatory knowledge arises from an intuitive realization of the symbols, and at the same time from the internalized knowledge of the text, they complement and reveal each other.
