Increasing demand of natural resources including metals and minerals, calls for discoveries of new, commercially viable mineral resources through affordable scientific exploration, involving series of activities in phased manner. Objectives, and goals of the exploration project determines the best suitable method for investigations. Either of, or combination of methods like geological, geophysical, geochemical, remote sensing, etc. are adopted during various stages of reconnaissance, prospecting, regional, and intensive exploration. Different activities under taken during geological exploration include field survey, geological mapping, pitting, trenching, drilling, collection of representative samples from the surface, pits, trenches, boreholes, analysis of samples, data interpretation, demarcation of ore zones, preparation of sections, volume calculation, grade wise resources estimation, and report preparation. While geochemical exploration emphasizes on surface sampling of lithological units, soil, water, vegetation, etc.; the geophysical exploration examines physical properties of the earth, such as gravity, magnetic, seismic, and electric properties of the earth by adopting indirect ground-based and airborne techniques to infer the underlying strata. Photogeology and remote sensing survey involve interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite imageries, obtained through camera mounted aircrafts and sensors onboard satellites, respectively.
