This chapter examines how Pakistanis articulate their identity as democratic citizens through key thematic discourses. The first section underscores the public's focus on their capacity to drive national change, predominantly through voting. The second section explores the diverse and fluid nature of democratic identity in Pakistan. It examines how being identified as part of a “Muslim nation” impacts views on the compatibility of democratic principles with religious values and norms, revealing complex interactions between these identity constructs. The final section contrasts this with a more pragmatic democratic identity, which offers a rational perspective on Pakistan’s global role and its relationships with non-Muslim and developed nations. This chapter provides insight into how these democratic and national identities shape perceptions of both domestic and international affairs.
