Underground Metro for Modern and Medium-Sized City—A Case of Copenhagen

In 1992, the Danish parliament decided to construct a new light driverless metro in Copenhagen, with two lines stretching 20 kms across twenty-two stations. Funding for the new metro system was obtained through the sale of municipally owned land. An underground metro was selected over a surface-level tram network because it offered higher speeds, reduced visual and noise pollution and lower incidence of accidents. Copenhagen has buildings from medieval times that are sensitive and of significant heritage value. An underground metro helps maintain the look and identity of the city. This chapter describes how the layout of the stations considers climate change mitigations, such as flood risk from sea level rise and increased rainfall, and highlights innovative ideas considered to reduce the construction’s carbon footprint and improve biodiversity in the districts influenced by the new metro line. This chapter is to a large degree based on articles from the book “Copenhagen Metro—Copenhagen Metro Inauguration Seminar”, 21–22 November 2002 in Copenhagen, published by COWI A/S/ [1]. It shows how a vision was developed for the first line of the Copenhagen metro and how this vision has been amended as the demand for sustainable development increased over the years.
