China is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases and its CO2 emissions per person have rapidly increased since the 1970s. China’s emissions exceed that of the vast majority of the developing countries both in absolute magnitude and on a per capita basis. In 2008, China surpassed the United States as the world’s largest emitter of CO2 placing China among other industrialized countries. Currently, the Asian country depends on fossil fuels to generate more than 80% of its energy. Fundamental changes are required in energy, transport, and industry for China to realize its national commitments to reach peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The transition is challenging and will require a massive shift in resources, innovation, and new technologies to enhance energy efficiency and resource productivity. Since China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, there is no solution to climate change without China. In late March, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration jointly released the “14th Five-Year Plan for a Modern Energy System,” detailing plans for China’s energy sector up to 2025. China has an enormous potential to contribute to solutions to climate change as the country has been the world’s largest and fastest-growing producer of renewable energy for more than a decade now. The energy transition in China has garnered global attention due to its significant implications for both domestic and international energy landscapes. As many developing countries look up to China’s development model with interest and admiration, it is important that China integrates climate change with economic development. China’s economic activities abroad also have a considerable impact on emissions. For instance, greener projects are being greatly advanced under the Belt and Road Initiative. The chapter will, therefore, delve into the multifaceted aspects of China's energy transition, analysing its domestic policies and the international context. It will explore the country's ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions, the increasing share of renewable energy sources, and newer ways by which China is enhancing energy efficiency. By examining the policy frameworks, technological advancements, and market dynamics, the assessment will provide a comprehensive overview of China's progress and the strategies employed to achieve a sustainable and low-carbon energy future.
