Linear EBUS

This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of Linear Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), a diagnostic tool used for real-time imaging and guided procedures in the airways and mediastinum. It explores the unique features of linear EBUS, including its ability to produce high-resolution images of the bronchial walls, lymph nodes, and surrounding structures. The technicality of performing the procedure with pre procedure preparation is also described in this chapter. Key techniques for optimizing image acquisition, performing biopsies, and navigating complex anatomical regions are also covered. Cytological sampling and its method for obtaining a better yield is also addressed in this chapter. By focusing on the practical aspects and advantages of linear EBUS, this chapter provides clinicians with essential knowledge to effectively use the technology in routine practice, enhancing diagnostic precision and patient outcomes. EBUS bronchoscope is difficult to manipulate in the airways owing to its thickness, limited flexibility and the forward oblique view angulation. The flexibility is further compromised if a needle set is introduced into the working channel of the bronchoscope. Also, it is difficult for the EBUS scope to enter into right and left upper lobes as well as right middle lobe. The balloon present in the EBUS bronchoscope is inflated with normal saline to help in obtaining good ultrasound images when in contact with the bronchial wall.
