Simulation for EBUS

Simulation-based training is the cornerstone of skill acquisition for endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) techniques. Given the steep learning curve associated with EBUS-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), simulation provides a safe, controlled, and reproducible environment for clinicians. Virtual reality and augmented reality technology helps learner with real time anatomy, bronchoscope navigation, lymph node localization and needle aspiration techniques with interactive scenarios improves technical skills and aid in confidence building decision making of trainees. Competency based skill assessment allows trainees to attend learning curves and real time feedback of their skills. With the growing demand for use of EBUS-TBNA in diagnosis and staging of mediastinal lymph nodes as well as peripheral pulmonary lesion, it is important to undergo simulation-based training that helps in procedural competence. The learning curve of EBUS is variable but it has been suggested that at least 40 to 50 procedures are necessary to have a basic procedural competency [1]. Since training of EBUS-TBNA through clinical encounters can cause increase harm to patients from novice operators, it is advisable to undergo simulation-based training wherever available which will improve learning curve with rapid acquisition of skills. It will improve the knowledge of airway navigation and various procedural skills. Several studies have been done to evaluate the efficacy of simulation-based training compared to conventional training. Konge et al., in his study found that virtual simulation training was more effective than traditional training [2].
