Oral health is an essential component of general health, and the association between the two has long been recognized. Oral diseases of the greatest global burden are dental caries and periodontal disease, which affect more than two billion people and nearly 14% of the world’s adult population, respectively. Oral diseases have significant impacts on healthcare systems, economies, and the quality of life of affected individuals worldwide. Intricate relationships exist between chronic noncommunicable diseases and oral diseases. Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus, in particular, have been linked to dental caries and periodontal disease, with smoking and obesity being significant risk factors. Oral health status in the Arab region remains under-researched, and comprehensive, up-to-date information on the prevalence of common oral diseases is limited. In the UAE, the prevalence of dental caries is relatively high, especially among school-age children, while that of periodontal disease needs to be further determined. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and smoking has been shown to be influenced by the status of dental caries and periodontal disease. These findings need to be well investigated with large-scale population-based studies in the UAE. The positive steps taken to reduce the prevalence of oral diseases and associated risk factors in the UAE need to be incorporated within broad national oral health policies for effective and sustainable outcomes. Increasing community awareness of the importance of oral health to general health must be a core element of these policies. Oral health remains fertile ground for research, and the multicultural environment of the UAE offers a unique opportunity for further exploration in this area.
