Strategies and Major Challenges in the Manufacture, Use, and Development of Seaweed-Based Products for Agriculture

Obtaining seaweed-based products has been outlined as an eco-friendly alternative to the conventional use of fertilizers and pesticides, avoiding its impact on the environment and limiting the dependence on nonsustainable resources. Incorporating new eco-friendly alternatives is crucial in integrated agriculture, especially in organic farming, where only a limited number of crop management products are allowed. Seaweed-based products can enhance plant growth and health in numerous ways, which depend on their specific application strategy and pursued effect, these can be grouped into three major sections according to their properties: (i) as a fertilizer and organic amendment, (ii) as a soil quality improver, and (iii) as a plant biostimulant. The remainder of this chapter will discuss the main advancements and challenges in this field of research focusing on (1) the agronomic interest of seaweed, (2) seaweed in agronomic soils, (3) seaweed as plant biostimulants, (4) the regulatory framework, (5) seaweed as an agricultural input and its applications, (6) nondesired effects, (7) science gaps, and (8) economic viability.
