Application, Challenges, and Opportunities of Safflower Hybrid Seed Production

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), cultivated for edible oil, is an essential oleaginous crop for nutrition and medicine. The nation’s need for edible oil is rapidly growing. However, over the past 10 years, less land has been allocated for the production of safflower worldwide. Low productivity is the reason behind declining area under safflower in India. The safflower has a poor seed output due to several adaption problems. The genetic enhancement of safflower benefited from advances in genomics-assisted plant breeding and biotechnology in several ways. Hybrid seed production is a focal point, involving controlled crossbreeding to exploit hybrid vigor and enhance traits like yield, oil content, and stress resistance. Despite promising applications, the journey toward widespread adoption of hybrid safflower seed production faces challenges. Developing stable and high-performing hybrid varieties is a primary hurdle, as safflower, like many crops, grapples with maintaining consistency in hybrid traits across years due to heterosis. Continuous research and breeding efforts are essential to overcome this challenge. Another critical aspect is the development of cost-effective hybrid seed production systems, which can be labor-intensive and require specialized skills, posing economic barriers for small-scale farmers. Addressing these challenges necessitates concerted efforts from the scientific community, policymakers, and agricultural extension services to develop and disseminate cost-efficient hybrid seed production technologies.
