Safeguarding global food security calls for delivering climate-resilient crop hybrids that ensure stable yields amid climate change. Hybrid vigour or heterosis is the presence of superior traits in the first filial heterozygous progeny as compared to the homozygous parental lines. The superior performance of hybrids over conventional open-pollinated varieties has driven remarkable growth in the seed industry across a variety of crops. Efforts to harness the full potential of hybrid vigour have led to the discovery of diverse pollination control systems that inhibit self-pollination in flowering plants. These pollination control systems remain at the core of efficient hybrid seed production. Among these, male sterility and self-incompatibility have become increasingly popular to overcome the challenges associated with manual emasculation. Modern genetic tools are now available that could drive fertility alterations for use in hybrid breeding and seed production. Besides, the success of hybrid seed production relies on several factors like isolation distance, pollen viability, stigma receptivity, synchronization of flowering, planting ratio and so forth. The growing number of released hybrids and varieties has uncovered stark limitations of morphological descriptors in ensuring the genetic purity of the parental lines, hybrids and varieties. The use of genetic testing based on molecular markers is serving as an efficient tool for quality assurance and quality control. Timely availability of pure seeds of the latest crop hybrids/varieties to farmers will be crucial to increase productivity, profitability and environmental sustainability.
