In addition to being a vital crop for poor farmers in emerging and undeveloped nations, pulses are crucial for human nutrition and have a major positive impact on agroecosystem services and food security. However, an imminent threat to global grain legumes is viral diseases. This chapter examines various viral diseases affecting legumes and explores management strategies for these diseases. Among various management strategies for viral diseases, utilizing host-plant resistance through the variability prevalent in landraces, crop wild relatives and germplasm offers a viable, economical and environmentally acceptable approach to managing viral diseases in legumes. Recent developments in molecular markers and the integration of omics technologies, viz., structural, functional and comparative genomics, have facilitated the identification of genomic regions linked to resistance against viral diseases. These advancements have also helped in identifying potential genes, understanding their functions and deciphering the complex regulatory mechanisms involved in legume resistance against viral diseases and insect vectors. This chapter provides an overview of the scope and limitations of advanced next-generation breeding techniques and novel biotechnological tools for developing virus-resistant grain legumes.
