Pulses are a critical part of the Indian diet, providing essential proteins, minerals, vitamins, and fibers for most of the population. In India, more than a dozen pulse crops are cultivated over 29 million ha. Chickpea, pigeon pea, mung bean, urdbean, and lentil are the most popular and widely cultivated pulses in India. However, several factors contribute to low productivity in most pulse crops, with fungal diseases such as wilts, rusts, root rots, and leaf spots being significant production constraints. In recent years, there have been significant advancements in enhancing disease resistance by developing genotypes resilient to these fungal pathogens. Both conventional and molecular breeding techniques have been employed to achieve this progress. Molecular breeding methods have facilitated the transfer of genes from wild species to cultivated pulse genotypes, boosting their resistance to diseases. This chapter deals with the major fungal diseases affecting key pulse crops like chickpea, pigeon pea, lentil, mung bean, and urdbean. It also explores various conventional and genomics-assisted breeding strategies aimed at strengthening fungal disease resistance in these pulses’ crops.
