Socio-Hydrogeomorphology and School Catchment as Useful Science and Tool for Disaster Risk Reduction

In Brazil people have been frequently suffering from several types of natural hazards, among which mass movements and flash floods may be most severe due to its geographic feature. Such natural hazards cause sediment-related disasters whose reduction is one of the most important national concerns. For disaster risk reduction, sciences with regional characteristics are indispensable. Hence, we highlighted socio-hydrology, sociogeomorphology and socio-hydrogeomorphology which is defined here as the science to study the interactions among social, hydrological, and geomorphic processes and also to study their system structures, i.e., society, water body, and landscape. An essential tool to apply the socio-hydrogeomorphology can be school catchment whose concept was introduced and has been still developed in Brazil. Here we define school catchment as a geographic region that contains several monitoring instruments, and, in addition to being useful for scientific research, it can be a place for didactic activities serving the learning of sciences, education and any type of intellectual formation for all the citizens. Furthermore, to improve school catchment activities, we emphasized the need of citizen sciences within school catchment.
