The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has found wide applications in a variety of fields, the most notable being high-voltage dc transmission. A recent modification to the MMC topology has removed the dc link supply and instead embedded the dc energy sources within the chopper cells. This topology is called the MMC with implanted energy cells and finds applications in electric vehicles and interfacing of renewable energy sources with microgrids. This paper presents an ideal model of the MMC with embedded energy sources to investigate and develop a deeper understanding of its working. The perfect model shown is simulated using MATLAB Simulink to verify its working.
