The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has introduced both significant opportunities and challenges for academic integrity. Understanding how AI is being implemented and its potential benefits and risks to academic ethics is essential for educators and policymakers. This study aims to systematically map the literature on AI and academic ethics, exploring trends, opinions, and developments to identify gaps and provide a comprehensive overview. A systematic mapping methodology was employed to gather and analyze data from key academic databases, including Scopus and Web of Science. The final dataset comprised 39 articles, which were analyzed to extract information on publication trends, geographical distribution, citation counts, and thematic focus areas. The results indicate that there are 18 articles published in both Web of Science and Scopus, with 61% being theoretical and 39% empirical. The most cited studies address the risks and opportunities of using AI, particularly ChatGPT, in higher education. Geographically, the United Kingdom leads with the highest number of publications, followed by the United States and Australia. The Journal of Applied Learning and Teaching and the International Journal for Educational Integrity are among the most prolific journals on this topic. Notably, the studies predominantly focus on higher education, with a significant lack of research on basic education levels. The study underscores the need for ongoing research and policy development to ensure the responsible use of AI in academia, bridging the gap between technological capabilities and ethical practices. This review provides a solid foundation for future research and highlights the importance of integrating ethical considerations into the educational use of AI.
