Passive Nano Particulate Chemotherapeutic Gene Targeting of Immune Cells

Chemotherapy is most commonly used to treat cancer; severe toxicity can be noticed due to unspecific drug delivery systems. The application of nanoparticles has improved efficacy and reduced chemotherapeutic agents’ toxicity as they specifically delivered anticancer drugs to tumor cells. They have drastically reduced systemic exposure and allowed intracellular delivery to the selected agents, thus it is useful for diagnosis, imaging, and treatment. Many targeted systems have been developed for delivering drugs using nanotechnology such as liposomes, micelles, dendrimers, and polymeric nanoparticles. In this chapter, passive nanoparticle delivery system was highlighted as a technique to improve immune cells’ ability to handle cancer cells as part of successful immunotherapeutic strategies. Also, different immunotherapeutic strategies were discussed, and the choice of suitable nano delivery system that will maximize the efficacy of cell-based treatments, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and immune adjuvants was highlighted.
