The halal industry has become an important sector in the global economy and its growth has created the need for a legal framework to regulate its practices. This chapter explains the legal framework for the halal industry in Indonesia and draws lessons for other countries, notably Brunei Darussalam. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population of any country in the world and has developed a comprehensive legal framework for the halal industry, which includes laws, regulations and standards. The discussion analyses Indonesia’s legal framework and its effectiveness in promoting the halal industry and protecting consumers. Brunei is a predominantly Muslim country that has recently made efforts to develop its halal industry. Its current legal framework is described and the chapter proposes ways in which it can be improved based on Indonesia’s experience. Overall, the argument suggests that developing a comprehensive legal framework is essential for the growth and success of the halal industry. The lessons learned from Indonesia’s experience can be applied to other countries, including Brunei, to ensure that the halal industry is properly regulated and meets the needs of consumers.
