In order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5 which provide a roadmap for achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Women’s empowerment and gender equality are necessary for sustainable development. Despite the fact that women make up the majority of farmers, they have a lot of experience adapting to climate change, still they don’t have a seat at the table when decisions are made. Gender imbalance coupled with the climate crisis is posing a great threat. Women are relatively more dependent on natural resources yet have lesser access, they are particularly disadvantaged due to social norms and socio-economic structures. Women’s health is endangered by the changing climate and its adverse impact due to limited access to healthcare and services. Government policies should be such that could help societies in taking quick response and adapt easily to the impacts of climate change by empowering women through better healthcare services, education, and inclusion. Women have culturally assigned and unpaid duties, scarcity of natural resources deepens the structural challenge of gender imbalance. Despite the fact that women are disproportionately having higher impact of climate change, they are considered to play a critical role in response to climate change and adaptation strategies due to their local knowledge resources. This paper tries to look into the vulnerability of women due to the negative impacts of climate change and the role that women can have in adaptation to changing climate. To evaluate the condition for gender equality and women’s empowerment in the environmental context ‘Environment and Gender Index (EGI)’ is used. This index is used to assess environment and gender variables together.
