The study is based on one of the major industrial city in West Bengal, India. The present study analyzes trends of urbanization, and explain spatial pattern of centripetal forces in urban development in Durgapur City. A modern city is very different from the earlier forms of urban centers since it is more dynamic and a combination of forces plays their role in its development and evolution. The forces which make functions to remain in the city are called as centripetal forces. These forces tend to pull population and production into agglomerations. The factors such as urban population density, decadal growth rate, absolute growth of population, and geometric forecasting (712225 persons in 2021, and 894112 persons in 2031) of population are employed in the study. Study reveals that the main driving forces of urbanization in Durgapur have been a presence of a number of industrial plants and thermal plants. Over the time, however, social amenities like health care, educational facilities, and industrial-manufacturing facilities, as well as growing transport infrastructure, have become more active factors in rapid urbanization in Durgapur. Modern city of Durgapur is driven by its Industrial establishments, development and expansion of infrastructure and civic amenities and its regional significance.
