Sustainable Coatings and Films for Active Food Packaging
摘要
Active food packaging incorporates the indulgence of novel technology to ensure food quality and safety. However, traditional petroleum-based materials significantly account for pollution in the form of a carbon footprint and resource depletion. Perhaps the significance of sustainability has given rise to the use of eco-friendly polymers as primary components for active food packaging. The chapter focuses on the study of numerous sustainable polymers, natural extracts, and bio-based compounds to be incorporated as coating and films for active food packaging systems to be potential alternatives to replace conventional packaging materials. The materials include bio-based compounds such as biopolymers and bioplastics. In this regard, biopolymers such as carbohydrates, protein, and polyester polymers could be useful. Adding active ingredients like antimicrobial agents, antioxidants, gas scavengers, etc., is useful for producing functional film and coatings for food packaging. The chapter also includes evaluating the physical and functional properties of such materials to establish compatibility with various food products. Furthermore, the application of sustainable packaging film in food applications is also discussed. The current study affirms a comprehensive understanding of the ecological footprint associated with these materials. Furthermore, the chapter focuses on revolutionizing the food packaging landscape to foster a more sustainable environment.
