The Global South is faced with challenges that are unique in terms of waste management streams of biobased products. These products are derived from renewable resources like agricultural wastes and plants which are more friendly to the environment when compared with fuel-based fossil products from traditional sources. However, waste streams are generated from the production and disposal of biobased products which requires strict management. Agricultural waste is a major waste stream in Global South countries (Africa, Asia, and Latin America). These countries rely majorly on agricultural activities as a principal economic activity, thereby resulting in increased generation of residue from crops like husks, straw, and stalks. Such residue can be utilized in the production of biobased products such as bioplastics, biofertilizers, and biofuels. The improper disposal of wastes from these activities is a major problem that can result in environmental pollution and health issues. Production processes also generate some form of waste generation associated with biobased products. For instance, biochar and glycerol are waste products from the production of biofuels that require proper disposal. Similarly, bioplastics may generate waste streams such as polymers and packaging wastes. These waste streams require waste management strategies that are effective in preventing contamination and resource recovery maximization. Also, the management of end-of-life biobased products is a great challenge as Global South countries lack the necessary infrastructure for biodegradation that is needed for composting, thereby affecting their disposal. With this, the biobased products are usually discarded indiscriminately in landfills where they decompose to cause pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases. There is a great need to ensure sustainable waste management practices in the Global South. This can be focussed on infrastructures for collection of wastes, recycling, composting, and segregation of biobased materials. Also, the government can formulate policies on disposal of biobased products and initiate recycling, and facilities for composting. The public may also be enlightened through campaigns and meetings on the need for waste management that is responsible for ensuring a positive behaviour change.
