Biobased products, derived from renewable biological resources, play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing resource efficiency, and improving the livelihoods of local communities. Understanding their impacts is essential for evaluating their contribution to economic development and sustainability. However, the production and adoption of biobased products in the Global South come with challenges, including social, environmental, and economic implications that require careful monitoring and assessment. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of biobased products focuses on critical issues such as land-use change, soil health, water usage, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. By assessing these factors, sustainable production practices can be identified, ecosystem management enhanced, and land-use planning improved, thereby maximizing the benefits of the Global South’s ecosystems. The Social Impact Assessment (SIA) of biobased products examines how rural communities interact with these products, addressing issues such as gender equality, food security, labor rights, and land ownership. Large-scale bioenergy projects or agro-industrial developments can displace smallholder farms, leading to social conflicts over land rights. The Economic Impact Assessment evaluates the contributions of biobased products to job creation, income generation, value chain development, and overall economic growth in the Global South. Infrastructure investments, technology transfer, and human capital development are key to the successful implementation of EIAs, which can foster economic diversification, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and promote sustainable livelihoods.
